Brownie mixture: (*SEE NOTE)
4 oz unsweetened chocolate
2/3 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Melt chocolate and shortening in large saucepan over low heat, or in microwave in a large microwave safe bowl. Remove from heat and mix in sugar, eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Spread into a greased 13″x9″ baking pan. Continue with the directions for the cheesecake mixture below.
- *NOTE: a 20 1/2 oz pkg brownie mix can be used in place of the above brownie mixture, just prepare according to directions, spread into pan and continue with the directions for the cheesecake mixture below.
Cheesecake mixture:
1-8oz pkg cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
Beat cream cheese with mixer on medium speed until smooth. Add sugar, mixing till blended, add egg and vanilla. Mix just till blended. Pour cream cheese mixture over brownie mixture; cut through several times for marble effect. Bake at 350° for 3 to 35 minutes or until cream cheese mixture is lightly browned. Cool; cut into squares. Makes 24
The brownie mixture recipe can also be used without adding the cheesecake mixture to make plain brownies, and if desired 1-cup chopped nuts can be added.
